Hey friends! If you’re reading this, chances are you have a family member/best friend/teacher/friendly barista who loves to crochet, and they have an upcoming holiday or special occasion. You need a crochet gift!
You want to give them something related to their hobby that they’ll enjoy, but you have no clue what to get them, or where to even start. Yarn? Hooks? Whatever else you use to crochet, but you’re not really sure what that even is?
Don’t worry, I’ve got your back. I’ve compiled a list of ten different crochet gift ideas for the crochet addict in your life. These gifts can fit any shopping budget, and work for anybody who likes to crochet, guy or gal!
From materials and tools to crochet-themed memorabilia, you’ll have a wealth of gift ideas, along with a better understanding of what exactly we crocheters want and need for our favorite pastime.
Read on to find the perfect gift for the crochet lover!
1. Yarn
Let’s start with the most obvious choice: yarn! Most people who work with yarn are kind of yarn hoarders- we love it and want ALL of it! Yarn can be difficult to gift if you’re not familiar with yarn in general. Different types of fiber, yarn weight (thickness), color choices, and brands can leave you feeling overwhelmed and unsure what to choose.
The best way to pick yarn to give as a gift is to listen to what the recipient says about yarn. Sometimes a crocheter might have a preference for certain types of fiber or weight, and sometimes they have no preference. Some crocheters only like to work with certain brands, while others aren’t as concerned with what company their yarn comes from.
Ask the person you’re giving the gift to: “what kind of yarn do you like best?” and you’ll usually get a fairly straightforward answer. Then take note of what they say and use that to help your shopping go smoothly!
If you can’t ask the recipient what kind of yarn they like, or if they didn’t have a helpful answer, your next best bet is to look for yarn that you can’t usually find in big box craft stores- perhaps hand-dyed yarn from a small independent dyer, or yarn made of a nicer material like silk or bamboo. Something many crocheters don’t work with often. As a crocheter, it’s always a treat to work with unique or special materials- and that makes a thoughtful crochet gift in my books!
Some good places to start: Darn Good Yarn, Wool And The Gang, Lion Brand Collection Yarn
2. Monthly Crochet Box
If it’s in your budget, a subscription to a monthly yarn club is a gift that keeps on giving!
Most subscriptions consist of a box full of yarn-related goodies; usually one or two skeins of yarn, a pattern, and the tools you need to make the pattern such as a certain size or type of hook or needles. Some subscriptions also include extra surprises and mystery gifts, as well as membership discounts and other benefits.
There’s several different boxes to choose from: a few I would recommend are Darn Good Yarn’s $10 Yarn Club, Knitcrate Membership, and Little Box Of Crochet. All of these boxes include unique and beautiful materials, and are a perfect way to let someone know you’re thinking of them all year long!
3. Crochet Hook Set
Some crocheters can be particular about the types of hooks they use, but if you know someone who has all different sizes and styles of hooks, a full set of crochet hooks can be a great gift!
Sets usually include hooks that range in size from tiny, thread-crochet size to the thicker sizes used for chunky yarn. Look for a set that includes a case for easy storage and traveling.
Popular sets include Lykke Crochet Hooks, Furls Crochet Hooks, and Addi Swing Hooks. There are also some great options in the more affordable price range, like Clover Amour Hooks or Susan Bates Hooks. There’s even a set of light-up crochet hooks from Crochet Lite!
My favorite crochet hook set can be found here– they’re lightweight, smooth, and the set is so affordable. I’ve used these hooks since I started crocheting years ago, and I highly recommend them!
4. Yarn Winder
A yarn winder is a nifty tool to have in a crocheter’s arsenal. It turns skeins and balls of yarn into little ‘cakes’, and makes using yarn much easier. There are several different yarn winders on the market, and they come in different sizes and shapes.
You’ll want to consider how much space the recipient has to work with, since some winders are much larger than others. Some options to consider:
Lion Brand Natural Mega Wool Winder, Darn Good Yarn Yarn Ball Winder, Knit Picks Yarn Ball Winder
5. Yarn Bowl
Another great yarn accessory to have is a yarn bowl, which is simply a bowl or dish with a hole or cut-out in the side for the strand of yarn to be pulled through while you work. Putting a ball or cake of yarn in a yarn bowl keeps the yarn from bouncing around all over as you work, and minimizes tangling.
Yarn bowls come in all different shapes, sizes, finishes, and price ranges, so you’re bound to find the perfect yarn bowl for the recipient. You can also have a custom yarn bowl made from an independent crafter for an extra personalized gift!
Darn Good Yarn offers great yarn bowls, and you can also find some beautiful ones on Etsy.
6. Craft Caddy
A craft or yarn caddy is a perfect gift for a crocheter who can never seem to keep track of their supplies, or for someone who has one particular spot in their home that they like to crochet in. Think of it like a magazine rack, but for crafters.
It stores and organizes your yarn and other tools in one convenient place, which means no more hunting down lost hooks or ending up with piles of yarn on the floor. Look for one with a sturdy frame and a large, roomy pouch with extra pocket space for maximum storage capacity. I like this one!
7. Project Bag
A good quality project bag is a must-have for people who like to crochet on the go. Even if the recipient already has a project bag, you can never have too many- project bags can also be used for yarn and project storage, and help keep all the materials needed for a certain project in one place.
Some project bags come with special pockets for yarn, or even holes in the side or the lid so you can use your yarns straight from the bag! You can choose something simple and practical like this one, or go with something cute, quirky, or stylish depending on the recipient’s preference.
8. Crochet Notions
Notions are another thing you can never have to many of as a crocheter! Notions include tools like stitch markers, tapestry needles, thread clippers, craft scissors, soft rulers, stitch holders, and more.
You can buy these individually, or as a complete notions set, which makes a great crochet gift as these usually come with a handy storage case.
Stitch markers are a popular choice, since there are several different styles and options to choose from. A good gift idea is to find a handmade set from an independent crafter- you can usually find personalized (or at least specifically themed) stitch marker sets that make a thoughtful gift!
9. Yarn Storage Unit
If the recipient is a yarn hoarder (as many crocheters are) and tends to run out of space to store their ever-growing yarn stash, a yarn organizer might just be the perfect gift!
A simple plastic shelving unit or a hanging organizer made of fabric is an easy and inexpensive way to store yarn and other crochet supplies. These also work well for smaller spaces, so even if the recipient doesn’t have a big craft room (or even much other room to work with), it’s still an efficient storage option. Look for something with a customizable frame, like this one.
10. Crochet Pattern Book
In the age of Pinterest and online patterns, many crocheters don’t own any pattern books, so getting one as a gift can be really special. There are tons of different books on the market, so think about what the recipient likes to crochet or crochets a lot of (blankets, hats, toys, etc) and use that to help you know what to look for.
Someone who crochets a lot of shawls might enjoy a book of delicate crochet stitches, or someone who crochets a lot of blankets may enjoy a book of different home decor crochet projects.
You can often find crochet pattern ebooks or online versions of books that are already in print, and that’s another option to consider. A few great ebooks I would recommend:
Bonus: Crochet Themed Gifts
If you know the recipient crochets, but you’re still not sure if you want to give them any materials or tools, you can always go with the foolproof crochet themed gift. Something that says ‘hey, I know you said that you’re into this hobby, but I don’t know you super well yet/I’m not sure what kind of materials you would want/I’m on a tight budget/etc’. Some of my top picks for crochet-themed non-crochet items:
