A new year means a fresh new start on cleaning up your craft area! If you’re like me and you have a yarn stash the size of an ocean liner, you’re probably looking for some yarn stash organization ideas.

Part of being a crocheter/knitter/fiber artist is hoarding ALL the yarn. I love to shop for yarn on clearance, and after many trips to the sale bins at Michael’s and Jo-Ann’s, I’ve managed to accumulate several shelves worth of yarn in my yarn cave- ahem, I mean craft room.

It got a little out of hand after a while- at one point in time, I had bags and boxes and literal PILES of yarn scattered everywhere!

To tame the beast of a yarn stash that I’ve collected, I use simple shelving units to display the prettiest skeins in my stash, organized by weight and color. The rest I put in cute bins and tote bags (also organized by weight and project status).

This method works best for my space and living situation, but there are lots of unique and beautiful ways to store your yarn stash!

You may prefer to keep everything tucked away and tidy in baskets or bins. Or, you may like to show off your stash with shelves or a pegboard wall. There’s a ton of yarn stash organization ideas on Pinterest, as well as other inspiring craft room ideas.

Easy Yarn Stash Organization Wall from Ashlea at Heart Hook Home

I’m in LOVE with this great yarn storage method from Ashlea at Heart Hook Home! This easy and inexpensive DIY yarn wall is both beautiful and functional. The pegboard storage method makes it easy to keep track of your stash, and helps you avoid accidentally re-buying yarn that you already have on hand. (Something I’m definitely guilty of…) Plus, it’s just plain pretty! This yarn wall would make for some amazing decor in a crocheter’s crafting space.

DIY Wooden Crate Yarn Stash Storage Shelves from Jess at Make And Do Crew

This easy DIY project is one of my favorite yarn organization ideas I’ve found so far! The wooden crate shelving is so easy to assemble, and adding a wood stain to the crates really makes them pop. It looks like a shelf straight out of a furniture catalog! And, depending on your space and the size of your yarn stash, you could easily make this project larger or smaller to accommodate your yarn storage needs.

DIY Yarn Stash Storage Tutorial from Stephanie at All About Ami

Another great way to display your skeins of yarn is by utilizing your existing shelves. I love this easy tutorial on how to use corrugated plastic material to create this diamond shelf insert! It shows off your yarn stash and helps you incorporate it into your decor, while allowing for easy access and organization by color, yarn weight, etc.

Repurposed Crib for Yarn Stash Storage from Darleen at Crochet By Darleen Hopkins

For a unique and thrifty way to store skeins of yarn, try using a side panel from a repurposed crib! I think this idea is so neat. It would be a great way to keep your yarn handy near your comfy chair or crafting station. You could rotate out skeins and store your current project yarn this way, making it easy to find what you need right away. Plus, a panel from a crib is much more lightweight than a shelf, so you could easily move the panel if necessary.
